Featured Neighborhood: Daniel Island

Twenty-five years ago, Daniel Island—the thriving waterfront town tucked between the Cooper and Wando Rivers—was 4,000 acres of undeveloped farmland. Today, it’s one of the most sought-after areas to live in the Lowcountry. Situated about 20 minutes from downtown Charleston, 25 minutes from Sullivan’s Island and Isle of Palms beaches, and 10 minutes from Mount Pleasant’s ample shopping, this planned community has a prime location. But there’s plenty to do on the island itself: notable corporations like Blackbaud and BenefitFocus have set up shop there, along with the Volvo Car Stadium (which hosts big-name concerts year-round and the Volvo Car Open each spring), plus the Daniel Island Club, which boasts Rees Jones and Tom Fazio-designed golf courses. The island oozes small-town charm: think flocks of kids biking to get ice cream after school and families crabbing in tidal creeks at sunset.

WHO LIVES HERE: Daniel Island is a picture-perfect small town for families. It’s home to three top-quality schools (including Porter Gaud High School), doctors offices, boutiques, and restaurants—not to mention safe, low-traffic streets. The Daniel Island Club appeals to retirees and families alike looking to live feet from grade-A golfing or seeking a country-club lifestyle. The island has been named one of the nation’s top golf communities by Travel + Leisure Golf, Luxury Golf, and Travel and Golf magazines, and was dubbed one of the 20 best places to live on the coast by Coastal Living. With scores of creek- and river-front properties, it’s a hotspot for those looking to live on or near the water.

WHERE TO EAT AND DRINK: On-island eateries abound, but here are our favorites. Grab breakfast or coffee from Blondies Bagels & Cafe (their handmade cream cheeses are delicious) and lunch at Laura Alberts, where Southern classics get a modern twist. We love dinner at Sermet’s Courtyard followed by a glass of wine from Bin 526.

WHAT TO DO: Volvo Car Stadium brings no shortage of concerts to the Lowcountry—from Kacey Musgraves to Dave Matthews. And if you haven’t been to the Volvo Car Open (often hosting the likes of Serena and Venus Williams), make 2020 your year. Lastly, you’ll want to spend time in Mother Nature. More than 25 miles worth of verdant trails wind throughout the island, and tucked within each residential neighborhood is a lush park.
